Rock Carvings The Buddha Bay statues are concentrated in Northern Rock carvings, which are 300 meters long. There are 290 cave shrines on the precipice which are seven meters high. Buddha bay statuses are carved meticulously and uniquely with handsome and free gestures. The Buddha Bay are divided into south and north two areas, with works in late Tang dynasty and Five dynasties in the south , with works in two Song dynasties in the north. The works in the late Tang dynasty are those who were elegant and full, with plain dress and smooth lines. The works in the five dynasties are those who were exquisite, colorful, the dressings are turning from simple to complex, gradually getting rid of the effect of alien culture, putting on the characteristics of rock carvings in the transitional period. The works of the two Song dynasties are prominent for the national features. Baoding hill carvings are 15 kilometers from the northeast of Dazu county which were built in South Song dynasty(1179-1249 AD),proceeded for 70 years with 13 rock carvings, thousands of statues, in which the Big Buddha and Small Buddha are the biggest .There are huge series of carvings which are composed of 19 suites of Buddhist stories with 15000 well invented statues, all of which are of no similarities. Baodingyuanjue hole are carved from whole stone into as a spacious room. There are three Buddhists with different gestures in the front precipice of the hole, their clothes and muscles are very true. There are pavilions, human and animals, flowers and trees, quiet springs and strange stones all carved as realist works, all of these are the essence of the Big Buddha Bay carvings. There are 30 pictures of huge carvings, their main subjects are Buddhist stories with description carved as Buddhist scripture and ode. All these are like a comic with pictures and descriptions different from the other rock carvings in China.
